#20: Scientific Committee

Description

A scientific committee that provides guidance to responsible authorities.

Function

Advice can be provided on things like potential or imminent threats, strategies to deal with them, monitoring programs, research needs, etc.
It aims to compensate lack of technical knowledge that (political) authorities are often facing when it comes to integrated water resource management.

Example: The Scientific Committee for the Lake Simcoe

A scientific committee was established in Canada to study the conditions and relevant issues regarding Lake Simcoe. The committee review the environmental situation of the lake, forwarding advice to ministries of the government with respect to the ecological status of the watershed, potential or imminent threats and, in this case, viable strategies to deal with these. In parallel, the committee supports the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, by identifying the necessary scientific research for its implementation and contributing to the design of monitoring programs to verify the meeting of the plan’s objectives.
